Although initial sales may have been off to a slow start, demand for hybrids is now on the rise. Despite hard times overall for the automotive industry, new hybrid registrations climbed 34% in the United States between 2010 and 2012. The jump in Australia is even more noticeable, with hybrid sales jumping by 160% in 2012 alone. Despite weak sales over the past ten years, consumers seem to be ready and willing to make the leap to more environmentally friendly options. It seems that a number of factors could be contributing to this new interest in hybrids, including rising fuel prices and improved technology. If you're on the fence about making this transition into driving an eco-car, you'll want to look more closely at the advantages and disadvantages of going electric.

Pros of Driving a Hybrid

Naturally, one of the major benefits of purchasing and driving a hybrid car is that you will have access to a cleaner, more efficient vehicle. Hybrids offer more miles to the gallon, while emitting less carbon dioxide. These green-friendly cars help drivers conserve energy, despite having all the power of more traditional petrol engines. Hybrid technology has come a long way over the past few years. If you take a look at a motoring car comparison tool today, you'll see that hybrid and fully electric cars provide many of the same amenities and levels of performance as more traditional vehicles. They are better equipped to handle a wider driving range thanks to features such as regenerative braking, which helps recharge the battery each time the driver brakes.

Further incentives to driving a hybrid car include potential tax benefits, government rebates, or employer perks. For instance, some businesses give free parking spaces to employees who drive environmentally-friendly cars, and insurance rates may be lowered as well. Finally, as the demand for cleaner, greener cars continues to grow, the resale values for these vehicles are high. If you compare depreciation rates of electric or hybrid cars to more traditional cars, you'll see that today's green models are coming out ahead.

Cons of Driving a Hybrid

Despite these numerous incentives, hybrid cars may not be right for everyone. If you're looking for raw power behind the wheel, a hybrid may not compare to a sportier conventional car. Although they're swiftly catching up in terms of performance, most hybrids have lower power outputs than sports cars. They're built to boost economy rather than speed, and as such tend to have smaller engines and a lighter weight. This is more in line with what you would expect in a Ford Fiesta review rather than a Lamborghini.

At the same time, the upfront costs for a hybrid will be higher. Even with rebates and tax breaks, a hybrid car will still cost more than that conventional Ford Fiesta. Within the same brand and model, you could expect to pay as much as $10,000 more for the hybrid. Yet if you plan on driving the car for a long term period, you can expect to get this money back in the savings on fuel. Those looking for a short term car may find that the benefits do not balance out the cost.

Generally, hybrids stand out for their safety, reliability, and low running costs. They can be a great choice as a commuter or family car. However, those in the market for a sportier car or something to drive for a year may wish to look at other options.

Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells. Efficiency of solar panel must be greater than the efficiency of individual solar cells. Solar panels are made out of silicon which makes it efficient. Efficiency of solar panels can be increased with the help of mono-crystalline or multi-crystalline. Both mono-crystalline and multi-crystalline produces solar cells but mono-crystalline makes more efficient solar panel compared to multi-crystalline as mono-crystalline consist of only one type of silicon which is completely pure and more efficient. Another point that affects the efficiency of the solar panel is anti-reflection coatings.

The term ‘Global Warming’ refers to a certain phenomenon where the overall average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere gets inexplicably and unnaturally high. The increase of the amount of Greenhouse gases is deemed to be the reason behind this, according to most researchers and scientists. Apart from many physical and environmental effects such as volcanoes, glacier retreat and shifting, extreme weathers and earthquakes et cetera, Global warming has forced authorities and world leaders to go the ‘green’ way in many fields of sustainable development.

How does paper industry affect the climate?

Paper is the most important ingredient in the printing industry. The manufacturing procedure of papers is a complicated process that begins with deforestation. A simple fact is that 42% of wood is eventually used in order to manufacture paper so that it could satisfy the need of printing industry. Now, the world’s forests acts as a shield when it comes to repel the causes of global warming. It’s not only the gases but many other atmospheric particles that are classified under ‘Greenhouse’. But, statistics say that half of world’s forests have been burned or cleared in order to supply wood to various industries including the printing industry. Also, the little amount of forest left is still subject to deforestation threats. Now, with the increasing amount of deforestation the emission of these harmful gases increases too. Thus with the increased amount of greenhouse gases the temperature also rises radically.

Go Green solution:

It was high time and the world leaders, politicians and industrialists did realize the ill-disguised blessings of rapid industrialization. So, there have been many initiatives in the printing industry that resulted less deforestation and eco-friendly development. Recycling is the main factor of this ‘Go green’ movement. It was realized that it is best for humanity and the world if already used papers are recycled for fresh usage. A simple but astounding fact is that recycling ensured 38% less emission of greenhouse gases and 50% less of wastage of water. The various competing business enterprises of printing industries agreed upon this Green printing solution in order to sustain a better world and future.

The solar panel industry has grown steadily over the last few decades and in many areas solar panels can now generate affordable electricity. In fact, in 1998 it was estimated that the quantity cost per watt was about $4.50, which was 33 times lower than the cost in 1970 of $150.

What are some of the other benefits that come with solar power?

Green and Sustainable.
The focus on moving towards greener energy sources has exploded lately. Solar power is in the forefront of this development. It offers a way to harness energy that is completely green and sustainable (as long as the sun is shining, which it will for many billions of years into the future). Other than climate gases that are released during the manufacturing and installation of the panels (insignificant compared to that of fossil fuels and coal), there are no emissions whatsoever.

Financial Incentive.
Governor of California, Jerry Brown has signed legislation requiring the state`s utilities to obtain 33 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by the end of 2020. Similar legislations can be seen in many states across the country. This forces financial incentive, which also benefits homeowners. Go to National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for more information on what state/government rebates you are eligible for.

Solar Power Offers Security.
Many people do not link security with solar power. There are two ways of looking at security and solar power:
1) By cutting your dependence to the utility grid, you no longer need it to be up and running to have access to power. By installing a battery system where you store excess electricity generated with your solar panels, you can use electricity even though the grid is not up and running.
2) You are no longer a victim of the fluctuating electricity prices, which in the last years has steadily been increasing, and is predicted to keep increasing in the years to come.

Earth Day, April 22, marks the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement in 1970, leading to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clear Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. The concern for a clean environment is still strong, almost mainstream, 42 years later. The electric car is making a comeback, plastic grocery bags are banned in cities in California and Texas, and corporate sustainability programs are as common as wellness programs.

Unlike the first EarthDay, grassroots demonstrations in the streets and parks, today, companies are pioneering ways to go green and conserve the environment. Coca-Cola has a billboard in the Phillippines made of plants contained in old Coca-Cola bottles that reduces air pollution by 13lbs of carbon dioxide a year. UPS operates the largest private alternative-fuel fleet in the transportation industry, including more than 1,600 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas, hybrid electric, electric and propane-powered vehicles and began testing an all-electric, zero-emission package car in London.

Cox Enterprises has a national sustainability program that is designed to reduce its carbon footprint by 20 percent, reducing its energy consumption by embracing alternative energy methods, conserving natural resources and inspiring eco-friendly behavior. 90% of thier network operations vehicles at Cox Communications use a new hybrid operating system and are zero emissions vehicles during aerial operations. And Cox Business encourages customers to go paperless with an electronic ordering system. In one quarter alone, more than 50,000 pieces of paper were saved due to electronic ordering.

In addition, Cox Media Group just completed a studio lighting upgrade in Atlanta, Charlotte, Orlando and Seattle by replacing incandescent lighting with modern fluorescent lights at a number of its television locations. The upgrade reduces studio energy consumption by up to 45 percent and prevents more than 780 tons of carbon from entering the environment. Cox Communications is posting tips all month on their social media pages, including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

You don’t have to buy an electric car or install solar panels (but if you do, that’s good!) to make a difference this Earth Day.

Here are ways you can go green:

Check your tire pressure. Having your tire pressure at the appropriate psi can reduce strain on your engine and significantly increase your gas mileage.

Use a reusable water container or bottle. The average time for a plastic bottle to biodegrade fully is approximately 450-1000 years. Hard and reusable bottles take a longer time, and the soft and non-reusable ones take a shorter time. Time also varies with the size of the bottle. If they are sitting in landfills sealed and compacted with all of the other trash and bottles with no air moving, they won't decompose at all.

Replace your light bulbs. If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an Energy Star-rated light bulb, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars. Earth Day marks the launch of a new 20-year life bulb that uses 85% less energy.

Turn off your power strips or use smart power strips. Putting your appliances and computers on power strips that can be turned off (or will turn off automatically); many appliances and computers continue to draw a small amount of power even when they are switched off.

Wash a full load in cold. Unless you're dealing with oily stains, the cold water setting on your machine will generally do a good job of cleaning your clothes. Even switching your temperature setting from hot to warm can cut a load's energy use in half. If you are washing a small load, use the appropriate water-level setting.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE to drive. Fast, in fact. But I am ever conscious of the NON-green aspects of my guilty pleasure and the fact that the cars I love to drive burn copious amount of non-renewable fossil fuel.

In the US, Chevy just announced a green warm fuzzy for new car buyers, called an Ecologic window sticker. The 2013 Sonic will be the first new vehicle to display the sticker that features the fuel-saving technology, end-of-life recyclability and the responsible manufacturing practices that went into the vehicle.

According to GM North America President Mark Reuss, "Customers want companies to be honest and transparent about their environmental efforts and sustainability goals, and rightly so."

At least we will now be more informed about the entire life cycle and the environmental impacts of our gas guzzlers.
Kind of like guilt-free chocolate.

Fortunately, 93% of them are recycled in community recycling programs, gardens and backyards, as they would surely fill our landfills otherwise. Christmas trees can be chipped, shredded and used as mulch again for water conservation and weed control, erosion and dust control on biking trails and bridle paths, and as additives in composting operations.

Plastic bags

Electronic appliances:

Recycling electronic items is not only cumbersome but also labor intensive process. It includes separating many components from the equipment as well as dealing with toxic materials like Lead, Mercury and chemical refrigerants. Though, the specialist companies do this at nominal rates. Some of these are:

Refrigerators

Washing machines

Mobile phones

Incubators and other large metal appliances

Aluminum cans:

The best reason why aluminum can recycle is advisable because they save almost 95 percent of the energy used for producing new cans. Mining and refining Bauxite, the ore for Aluminum, not only takes huge effort but causes great deal of pollution too.

Automobile waste:

Automobile waste is toxic for soil and can also cause fire hazards. Tires are recycled into crumbs to give fake soil effect which are further produced into artificial turfs for Football ground. The tires are being widely used for landscaping as well.

These recyclable daily use products are first collected and sorted. There are a few materials which are salvaged from the complex products like: Gold from computer components, Lead from the car batteries. Recyclable bins, Buy-back centers and curb side collection methods are used to collect the recyclable items.

Earlier on, it was considered that only naturalists and tree hugging individuals preferred to stay in Green Buildings and people living in Green Buildings was not a very common sight;

But all this has changed drastically with the changing times as people now a days are becoming more and more environment conscious and are even ready to shell out extra dollars to buy a place in a green building. As living in green buildings is becoming a normal trend in today’s time, it would not come in as a surprise if the prices of constructing a green building would actually fall with the increase in demand.

Today, many individuals and firms are opting to incorporate new and efficient energy saving models and concepts in their buildings. They are not just trying to save energy but to also stay ahead of the competition, as it is believed that soon, having a green house would be very much in vogue and thus there would be a great demand for green homes in the near future.

The green buildings in today’s times are unlike the ones in history. They are more sophisticated, modern, self sustained and highly advanced with a flair for nature’s essence and are more energy efficient than their traditional counterparts. Special measures are taken to incorporate the usage of renewable sources of energy in them to take care of a part of their energy needs for a cleaner and greener energy production for the purpose of self usage. Through better and efficient planning of the buildings, their costs can be easily reduced by the optimum utilization of the available resources.

Mostly, solar energy is used to produce energy in the Green Buildings and amounts to almost 90 percent of the total energy production but depending on the location of the building other natural sources like wind are also harnessed. Architects are now very seriously incorporating new and better design ideas for creation of even better Green Buildings.

The level of ignorance about the usage of solar power, to take care of the energy expenses, is fast decreasing as the people are slowly but steadily becoming more and more aware of the benefits of living in a green building. Even environment groups have contributed in spreading the knowledge about clean energy and the benefits of living in a Green Building. Even the Federal Government’s Energy Ratings System has popularized the awareness of Green Buildings. The U S Green Building Council has a unique Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design concept that looks into the energy efficiency of the constructed buildings in the U S by evaluating their usage of natural resources, their ability of conservation of energy, water and even building materials, and their carbon footprint. All these Green Buildings are L E E D certified on the basis of their energy efficiency and their capacity of energy generation by a perpetual and cleaner medium like the Sun. With so many efforts being put into the Popularization of the Green Building concept. The day is not far when they would be very much in demand, and once their construction gains speed and momentum the average cost would also come down significantly.

Energy efficiency and conservation of all available resources is the need of the hour and the Concept of Green Buildings not only uses it but also makes it a very feasible alternative to the present common way of construction of buildings where resources are wasted. The U S Government is seriously looking to make the Green Buildings popular by the introduction of the L E E D certification of the buildings. Energy efficiency and conservation along with the usage of Solar energy for self sustainability is slowly gaining popularity, and looking at the trend it can be easily said that soon the demand for a greener home would increase many folds and as a result the costs would significantly come down and what is needed is better planning and realization of the potential market of the aware citizens who wish to have a home in Green Buildings.

From Ed Begley Jr. to Lisa Ling, Mia interviews celebrities and other "green" enthusiasts, spreading the word to teach kids, and adults alike, all about green living. Her series airs on TreeLiving.com and tackles tough issues in a language that both kids and adults can understand. She is NOT an actress, just your average 5th grade girl who is doing everything she can to make the planet a better place for future generations. Her high-energy personality and love of Mother Earth have made Mia, not only an entertaining host to watch, but also the perfect spokesperson for the next generation of environmentalists.
GoingGreen.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16797882729966147441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-323981444127457296.post-42100734319357635672011-04-12T12:30:00.000-07:002011-04-12T12:33:35.515-07:00Earth Day 2011: A Billion Acts of Green®In recognition of the power of millions of individual actions, Earth Day 2011 will be organized around A Billion Acts of Green®: Personal, organizational and corporate pledges to live and act sustainably. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries/territories participating. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries/territories officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.

On Saturday 27 March, Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

Earth Hour 2011 will take place on Saturday 26 March at 8.30PM (local time). This Earth Hour we want you to go beyond the hour, so after the lights go back on think about what else you can do to make a difference. Together our actions add up.

Visit our Beyond the Hour platform to share your stories and to get inspiration from the actions our supporters have shared with us already.GoingGreen.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16797882729966147441noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-323981444127457296.post-76093616857246565912011-02-02T06:53:00.000-08:002011-02-02T06:58:26.475-08:00Washington State going green with electric highways<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNA3rQA7Q0h0HHMbyldBnLJ3s1BL-bjbREoHgkz6vUgbTf8PalnO_i0jM_9n2bbau_2ehV64TxGwKzdKJvSxVkrrC2YQUFvSzj5d2etBBQd04jGaybtRPl53BbTGvVobBXTW-zvI9i3p8Q/s200/Electric.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569106623584327394" />
The state of Washington is turning Highway 2 between Monroe and Peshastin known as Stevens Pass Greenway, into the nation's first electric vehicle friendly National Scenic Byway route, installing 2-3 fast-charging EV stations along the 90-mile route.

As Douglas Reiser writes for the Builder’s Counsel Blog, “the Highway 2 upgrade is only a small part of Washington’s Electric Highway plan.
